2025 ended on a high at UK ATC as MOONS began its journey to Chile.
After more than a decade of design and construction, this next-generation spectrograph is now on its way to the Very Large Telescope at European Southern Observatory's Paranal Observatory.
MOONS is the largest astronomy instrument ever built in the UK. Science on this scale is only possible through collaboration - bringing together scientists, astronomers, engineers and technicians from UK ATC, STFC, ESO and partners across the UK, Europe and beyond.
To mark the occasion, technician Kenny Campbell led the team, cheered on by colleagues from across the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, as the articulated lorry carrying MOONS headed off site.
